Filmmaking 101: How to Make a Short Film

This 4-week course guides students through the complete process of creating a short film—from concept to screen. Students will explore the fundamentals of visual storytelling, camera operation, sound recording, editing, and production planning. Through hands-on exercises, in-class workshops, and individualized guidance, participants will develop the skills to craft a compelling short film, gaining practical experience in both creative and technical aspects of filmmaking.

What you'll learn

- From idea to script writing
- Camera work, framing, lighting & sound basics
- On-set workflow & team roles
- Editing & post-production essentials

  • Shot types, composition, continuity
  • Show short clips and analyze visual storytelling choices

  • How to create shot lists & storyboards for individual projects

  • Intro to production logistics: casting, props, scheduling, and locations

  • Each person or team pitches a short film idea
  • Shoot a short in-class exercise scene (dialogue or silent action).

  • Rotate through roles: director, camera, sound, performer

  • Playback + critique

  • Cuts, pacing, continuity editing
  • Audio layers: syncing sound, dialogue, ambience, sound effects, music

  • Work with class exercise footage OR import your own short film footage (if shot).

  • Hands-on editing time with instructor guidance

  • Export rough cuts, teasers, or completed shorts

Ramsey Fendall

Ramsey Fendall is a cinematographer, director, producer, editor, and co-founder of Sublunar Films in Victoria, BC. With 15 years of experience in New York City as a founding partner of Room 5 Films, he has an extensive portfolio in documentary, narrative, and commercial projects. Notable work includes the short and feature film LUCID, Seymour: An Introduction, Bodega, and Major Arcana. He has also worked as an editor on projects like Moving Midway and A Woman Like Me. Ramsey has taught cinematography and editing at NYU, the School of Visual Arts, and The Edit Center.
