Intro to Interior Design

Step into the world of interior design and bring your creative vision to life. Whether you're dreaming of a new career or just want to take your personal design projects to the next level, this course is the perfect starting point for exploring the essentials of residential interior design. You’ll explore the fundamentals of design principles and styles, learn how to plan spaces effectively, and discover how to communicate your ideas with confidence. From kitchens to bathrooms, materials to sample boards, you'll gain hands-on experience that takes your ideas from concept to client-ready presentation. No prior experience required—just your passion for design and a desire to learn.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, you’ll have the foundational skills and confidence to bring your design ideas to life. You'll understand the design process from start to finish and learn how to communicate your creative vision through professional tools and techniques.

  • Understand and apply core design principles

  • Identify and work with a variety of interior design styles

Lucia Volker

Instructor

Lucia Volker is a designer and visual artist. She focuses on combining interior design and fine art to create engaging spaces. Lucia has worked in the design industry for the past four years, and previously worked in real estate and nonprofit art administration. Through her art practice, she has collaborated with the City of Victoria and the Victoria Arts Council to create large-scale installations for temporary public art initiatives. She is a 2024 graduate of Pacific Design Academy’s Interior Design Program, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in Printmaking from the University of Utah.

Information

  • 3-Ring Binder
  • Tracing paper (pad of 44 sheets – 22.8 cm x 30.4 cm
  • Pad of graph paper (8.5” x 11”, with ¼” squares)
  • White Sketch paper (no larger than 8.5” x 11”)
  • Tape (may use green tape or masking tape)
  • Mechanical Pencil, HB and 2H lead
  • Staedtler White Vinyl Block Eraser
  • Black ink pens (3), fine, medium & heavy thickness (0.1 mm, 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm)
  • Colour pencils
  • Drawing paper or sketchbook
  • Graphite pencils
  • Pencil crayons
  • Lined paper or notebook
  • ¼” graph paper
  • The pacing of units/topics taught were good and understandable.
  • It was a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and I looked forward to going to class every week. We went on an inspiring field trip, which helped us apply some of the skills we learned. Donna is very kind and a great teacher! 
  • I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot. Donna was a great teacher, helped us to stay engaged in the material and help us learn important and relevant content. 
  • I enjoyed learning about the principles of design and doing project 2 about elements and principles of design. I learnt a lot of design choices and what makes good functional design. 
  • The mood board assignment was very helpful, as we had to critically think about what we wanted to include on it and make our choices based on what we had learned in the course so far.
