Garment Construction

Students will learn essential garment construction techniques, as well as foundational pattern drafting skills. By the end of the course each student will have completed a sample book of sewing techniques, and basic pattern blocks in their size (skirt and bodice). If time permits, students may also have the opportunity to work on a project of their choice, based on their pattern blocks.

This course is ideal for beginners aiming to build a solid foundation in garment construction or for hobbyists seeking to enhance their sewing proficiency. By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the confidence and skills necessary to undertake personal sewing projects or further their education in fashion design.

Know the parts of the sewing machine and their functions

Wind a bobbin and thread the sewing machine correctly

Get hands-on practice with:

  • Seams

  • Darts

  • Collars

  • Pockets

  • Waistbands

  • Zippers

  • Buttonholes

  • Ruffles

  • Pleats
    …and more

Complete:

  • Two guided projects 

  • One self-directed personal project

Garment Construction Instructor

A graduate of the Fashion Design program at Pacific Design Academy, Maya is a fashion designer with a passion for alternative aesthetics. Her style is unique, embracing bold silhouettes that highlight femininity in the wearer. She has showcased her striking designs at various fashion shows in Victoria, bringing a unique and artistic vision to the runway. Maya’s expertise and creative approach will inspire you throughout the course!

  • Dressmaker’s Pins, Pin-cushion, Thread- Gutermann: (4) polyester;
  • Fabric and Paper Scissors, Tailor’s Chalk, Seam Ripper, Thread Snips;
  • Muslin: light-medium weight – 4 m;
  • HB Pencil, Three Ring Binder, Plastic Page Protectors
  • I appreciate that we covered a lot of material and skills because I now feel like I have a basic understanding of many different techniques that I can use to move forward.
  • This class was very useful to me in becoming more skilled in making clothes and working with various equipment and materials.
  • Instructor listened carefully to what I wanted to learn and planned extra samples for me to do as I was finished the required samples. She was also great about giving her time to discuss sewing related subjects.
