Introduction to Fashion Design

This introductory course explores the foundations of the fashion industry, from initial concept development to production and market delivery. Students will gain an understanding of how fashion and garment production operate as a business, including the roles of consumer demand, purchasing power, and market segmentation in shaping design decisions. Students will be introduced to influential fashion leaders of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, studying their unique strengths and lasting impact on the industry. Through discussion and creative exercises, students will begin to identify their own design interests and potential niches while learning how to develop ideas with a specific consumer in mind.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have the ability to reliably demonstrate:

  • Describe the fashion industry process, from concept development through production.

  • Analyze how consumer demand, purchasing power, and market segmentation influence fashion design decisions.

  • Identify target consumer characteristics and apply them when developing design concepts.

  • Develop and present design concepts that reflect their emerging strengths and chosen fashion categories.

  • Identify influential fashion leaders of the 19th and 20th centuries and explain their key contributions to the industry.

Donna Dowling

INSTRUCTOR –Fashion Design

Donna’s background in psychology, education, and instructional design led her to teach Interior Decorating at Algonquin College, sparking her transition to design. After studying art and architecture at Carleton, she launched a residential decorating firm and online consulting service, working with clients across Munich, San Diego, and Ottawa.
