Introduction to Hand Embroidery: Stitch, Texture & Creativity

This hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop introduces students to the art of hand embroidery. Students will learn essential stitches, explore textures and patterns, and create their own embroidered piece to take home. The workshop focuses on creativity, patience, and craftsmanship while encouraging personal expression through textile art.

What you'll learn
in this workshop

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of hand embroidery and essential tools, practice foundational stitches, transfer simple designs onto fabric, and create a small embroidered sampler or decorative piece to take home.

 

  • Introduction to embroidery and its history
  • Overview of tools and materials (hoops, needles, threads, fabric)
  • How to set up fabric in an embroidery hoop
  • Threading needles and starting/ending stitches

 

  • Transferring simple designs onto fabric  
  • Choosing colours and stitch combinations
  • Planning a small personal design

Manuela Biron

Instructor

Manuela has been sewing and embroidering since she was 5 years old. She studied Fine Arts in Art history and museum studies at the University of Victoria. Spending a semester in Ottawa working at the Museum of Civilisation she fell in love with the textiles that the museum was preserving. She has taken many courses in art and embroidery.   In 1992 she owned and operated Bernstein and Gold, a furniture and bedding store in Yaletown where she decorated prominent homes all over Vancouver, Whistler, and the gulf Islands.
