Intro to On-Camera Acting

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of acting for the camera focusing on techniques for truthful performance. Through exercises, scene work and recorded playback students will explore emotional truth while developing technical awareness of the camera

What you'll learn
in this workshop

In this workshop, students will explore the fundamentals of acting, including objectives, actions, given circumstances, emotional memory, and subtext. They will develop an awareness of the camera frame, eye lines, and the nuances of on-screen performance, while practicing cold reading and short scene work on camera. Participants will also build confidence in delivering authentic and compelling performances in front of the camera.

  • Lecture & Discussion: Acting as “living truthfully in imaginary circumstances.” Differences between stage and on-camera performance.
  • Film Study: Watch and discuss a sample scene

  • Camera Awareness: Step into frame and explore “small vs. big” choices to see how subtle shifts register on screen

  • Improv: “Who am I? Where am I? What do I want?” short filmed improvisations

  • Playback & Feedback: Discuss how changes “read” on screen versus in the room

  • Cold reading: quick script choices performed on camera
  • Script analysis.

  • Improv: pursue objectives in short situations (e.g., borrow money, convince to stay, ask forgiveness).

  • Subtext exercise: simple scene (e.g., “I’m fine”) with different underlying emotions.

  • On-Camera Work: Perform short fi lm/TV sides, focusing on clear objectives
  • Present a rehearsed 2–3 page scene, filmed with different camera angles (wide, close-up).
  • Playback & Feedback: Individual notes on strengths and growth areas

  • Wrap-Up: Group reflection on progress and next steps for continued training.
