Screenwriting I & II

This intensive course explores the theory and practice of screenwriting, from classic cinema to modern film and television. Students will analyze dramatic structure and industry techniques, focusing on commercial storytelling formats. Emphasis is placed on deconstructing scripts to understand what makes a narrative effective. The course equips students with professional terminology and analytical tools to enhance both their viewing and writing skills. Screenwriting I and II run consecutively in one semester, preparing students to write scripts for their future film projects. Courses are graded separately, with some material overlap.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Recognize the history/evolution of screenwriting and its assorted stylizations.

  • Apply format basics, act structure, scene geography, and reverence to occasion, etc.

  • Recognize the five components of a screenplay – story, plot, character, dialogue, theme.

  • Apply current and varied approaches to creating stories for film.

  • Utilize artistic and industry terms and tasks relevant to the screenplay craft.

  • Demonstrate a learned/critical analysis of all things film – screenwriting in particular.

  • Recognize the requirements of an industry professional screenplay and screenwriter.

  • Identify ways to collaborate with others on film projects in regards to the inception/development of an idea.

  • Apply the above list to their own writing from concept to completed draft.
