Garment Construction I

This course introduces the various fashion industry techniques used in professional garment sewing. Students will learn to use an industrial sewing machine and serger while gaining experience with a variety of common seams and construction techniques.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

- Successfully and independently operate an industrial sewing machine and serger (overlock).

- Produce a variety of seams and complete a sample book of garment construction techniques to document their skills.

- Apply their skills and knowledge to complete a final garment of the students choosing (instructor approval required).

Jennifer Risk

DEPT HEAD: FASHION DESIGN

Jennifer Risk is a multi-faceted creative with experience in costume design, draping, pattern drafting, and garment construction. She worked with Opera Santa Barbara and Portland Opera before shifting to academia, earning an MA and PhD in social science geography. A fibre nerd at heart, she spends her free time knitting, quilting, and reading about fashion history.
