Colour Theory

This course provides an in-depth exploration of colour theory as it applies to design and visual communication. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how colour functions in both traditional and digital contexts. Colour mixing, colour systems, psychology of colour, perception of colour, symbolism, colour terminology, and colour harmonies are some of the topics covered in this course as well as comprehensive history and the mechanics/science of colour. In this course students will explore various aspects of the use of colour and learn strategies for the integration of colour into effective communication design across various design media and applications.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Make colour choices purposefully and recognize how combinations of colour work together.

  • Recognize how designers apply colour effectively to resolve design challenges.

  • Communicate how various colours are perceived in the brain.

  • Demonstrate expertise using the colour picker options in Adobe graphics tools.

  • Design graphic communication with unique and outstanding use of colour.
