Zero Waste Draping

Students will learn basic draping on the stand, as well as zero waste pattern drafting skills. By the end of the course, each student will have completed multiple draped pieces, a zero-waste pattern, and captured photographs of their final outcomes in a penultimate photoshoot. Students will experience a variety of learning, from instruction-based classes to individual experimentation and explorations of form.

What you'll learn
in this workshop

This course equips students with a comprehensive understanding of draping as a crucial part of the design process. Learners will gain the skills to confidently create seams, darts, and hems, as well as observationally sketch their draped designs on mannequins. They will use collage as a tool for creative development and apply pattern drafting terminology and techniques effectively. Students will also learn to take accurate measurements, draft basic zero waste pattern blocks, label patterns, add seam allowances, and construct garments, refining them to bring their design ideas to life.

  • Students will explore how draping on a mannequin can inspire and shape garment design, learning to observe and sketch their work to support creative development.

  • Learners will gain confidence in using pattern drafting terminology, accurately measuring, drafting, labeling patterns, and incorporating seam allowances for practical application.

  • Students will create finished garments from their patterns, learning how to make adjustments and bring their design ideas to full realization through hands-on practice.
