Web Programming 1

This course introduces students to the design and development of websites, combining coding fundamentals with prototyping techniques. Students will learn to code websites through hands-on HTML and CSS projects and create prototypes using Figma, a design and prototyping tool. The course prepares PDA students for subsequent courses which include User Interface Design, Online Media Projects, Digital Publishing, CMS, and Web Programming 2.

Learning Objectives


On completion of this course, the successful student will be able to reliably demonstrate:

  • Basic HTML and CSS coding using a code editor featuring syntax highlighting, code completion, and browser debugging tools.

  • Understanding of basic computer and filesystem architecture, including file formats relevant to web development.

  • Apply introductory JavaScript for interactivity and use CSS animations for visual effects on web pages.

  • Creation of professional, interactive website prototypes using Figma.

  • Application of Figma components and variants to maintain consistency in web designs.

Jennifer Longstaff

INSTRUCTOR – Graphic Media Design

Jennifer is a software engineer, educator, designer, and program manager with experience in companies of all sizes. She holds degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Business, plus a Graphic Design diploma from PDA. A lifelong learner, she now teaches at PDA, freelances, and co-runs a consulting practice focused on app development.
