Space Planning 1

This course is an introduction to the basics of space planning through a mix of theoretical and practical hands-on projects. Following the design process used by professionals—beginning with research and planning, and moving through programming, design development, and evaluation—emphasises will be placed how to work efficiently and stay organized throughout a project. This course introduces you to how our surroundings affect how we feel and behave, touching on current ideas about the relationship between people and the spaces they use. The course covers how to bring together visual elements like line, shape, colour, and balance to create thoughtful, functional spaces that support the way people live and interact.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Articulate the basics of space planning in design proposals in response to project needs, challenges, and opportunities.

  • Analyze project requirements and create plans that use design principles and follow a clear design process.

  • Use anthropomorphic data (human body measurements and ergonomic data) to design spaces that are functional, comfortable, and visually appealing.

  • Create sketches, drawings, and visuals to share design ideas with clients for feedback and approval.

  • Recognize that design is an iterative process and to be open to offering and accepting peer critique .

  • Recognize key moments in the history of space planning and apply relevant ideas to current design projects.

  • Recognize and implement relevant design and building standards when developing project proposals.
