GD112 Intro to Graphic Design

This course is designed to be an introduction to the world of Graphic Design. It will explore the various areas of communication that utilize commercial graphic design. The course is structured to give you a comprehensive background overview and introduce you to the overall graphic design environment. You will learn about some of the basic roles of a graphic designer through a series of practical projects. After this semester, you will be familiar with the contemporary graphic design environment and be prepared to handle future intermediate and advanced college concepts and projects.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Gain an appreciation of the various graphic design disciplines.

  • Understand and apply basic graphic design terminology.

  • Become familiar with the application of basic graphic design skills.

  • Be introduced to the strategy underlying graphic solutions

  • Create effective solutions to graphic design challenges.

  • Practice project management skills.

*2025 Holidays:
  • September 30 (Tuesday) – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
  • November 11 (Tuesday) – Remembrance Day
This course follows the full-time program schedule, which begins on September 29. This term, two statutory holidays fall on Tuesdays. To ensure students receive the full 24 hours of class time, the missed hours will be evenly redistributed throughout the term.

For courses scheduled in 2-hour sessions, each class will be extended by 25 minutes.

Derek Chapman

INSTRUCTOR – Graphic Media Design

After studying graphic design in England, Derek began a career that took him from London to Montreal, Toronto, and Victoria. As an art and creative director, his work earned international recognition. He later taught at Sheridan College, focusing on the link between design and business, and now shares that perspective with students at Pacific Design Academy.
