Directing/Assistant Directing

Directing / Assistant Directing I focuses on the art and craft of directing. The course allows students to develop their own visual style while working effectively with crew and actors. Students will analyze the development of the dramatic situation, explore character needs and relationships, and break down a script into component parts. Students will learn and practice the role of the director throughout the filmmaking process. The role and the responsibilities of the assistant director will be analyzed, with particular emphasis on working with the director.

Learning Objectives


Upon successful completion, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Effectively lead a film crew.

  • Analyze and break down a script to identify key elements, scenes, and production requirements for effective planning and execution .

  • Utilize the language of film when working with crew and actors.

  • Identify and apply various approaches to conflict resolution.

  • Create conceptual ideas to realize in production.

Deanna Milligan

INSTRUCTOR – Motion Picture Production

Deanna Milligan is a Leo-nominated, Gemini Award winning Canadian actor and filmmaker. She has appeared in numerous film and television productions including Suspicious River, Big Sound, The X-Files, NorthWood, Da Vinci’s Inquest, and Corner Gas.

In addition to her extensive acting career, Milligan is also an accomplished director. She co-directed the feature film LUCID, which premiered at the 2025 Fantasia International Film Festival, expanding on her award-winning short of the same name.

Her work both as an actor and filmmaker is noted for its emotional depth and exploration of memory and imagination.
