Design Fundamentals

In this introductory course, you will learn how to apply the design elements and principles in the built environment. Working on your own projects, you will learn how the elements and principles of design affect human psychology, physiology, and behaviour and learn how to manipulate elements to achieve desired effects.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

- Describe interior spaces using a professional design vocabulary

- Evaluate if an environment is successful in achieving the principles of design (proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis, unity, variety, and harmony), based on its use of the elements of design (line, shape, form, texture, pattern, colour, light, space, mass, and scale) .

- Manipulate the use of the elements of design to fulfill the preferences of clients and create a design that achieves a desired effect .

- Use colour theory to describe the qualities of colour (value, intensity, and temperature) and the effects created by colour and colour interactions, and select colour schemes for specific purposes .

- Describe the sources, types, and characteristics of light and how each type interacts with other elements; and apply basic lighting techniques to highlight design elements and create appealing and functional environments .

Use the framework of the design process to define goals, specify requirements based on client needs, and establish priorities .

Use a variety of visual presentation techniques (both digital and traditional) to assemble attractive sample boards for client presentation .

Donna’s background in psychology, education, and instructional design led her to teach Interior Decorating at Algonquin College, sparking her transition to design. After studying art and architecture at Carleton, she launched a residential decorating firm and online consulting service, working with clients across Munich, San Diego, and Ottawa.
