Cinematography I

This course introduces students to the fundamental techniques and aesthetics of cinematography, with an emphasis on a hands-on, practical approach. Through in-class exercises and workshops, students will explore the art and craft of visual storytelling, including camera operation, lighting, composition, exposure, and movement. By the end of the course, students will have gained both the technical proficiency and creative insight necessary to effectively communicate stories through the lens of the camera.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Articulate key ideas and themes relevant to the history of cinematography.

  • Apply select shooting techniques and styles to the creation of a montage.

  • Demonstrate correct camera operation and handling.

  • Utilize professional lighting techniques.

  • Practice working with a crew and location shooting.

This course follows the full-time program schedule, which begins on September 29. This term, two statutory holidays fall on Tuesdays. To ensure students receive the full 48 hours of class time, the missed hours will be evenly redistributed throughout the term. 

For courses scheduled in 4-hour sessions, each class will be extended by 50 minutes.
