GD117 Design Fundamentals

This course introduces students to the essential principles and elements of design as a foundation for effective graphic communication. Through a series of discussions and hands-on studio exercises, students will explore visual concepts such as composition, balance, contrast, hierarchy, alignment, and the use of space and imagery. Emphasis will be placed on developing visual literacy, conceptual thinking, and problem-solving skills that are critical in the graphic design process. With an understanding of these fundamental concepts, students will be able to analyze their own and other designers’ work. Students will also be introduced to a workflow methodology for creating design across two- and three-dimensional work.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Identify and apply the fundamental elements of design: line, shape, form, texture, space, and value.

  • Demonstrate understanding of core design principles, including balance, contrast, alignment, hierarchy, rhythm, unity, and proportion.

  • Develop effective visual compositions that communicate specific ideas or messages.

  • Utilize both traditional and digital tools to explore design processes, from ideation and sketching to final production.

  • Practice iterative design by incorporating feedback and critique to revise and refine design solutions.

  • Analyze and critique visual work using appropriate design terminology and critical thinking skills.

  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of layout and composition techniques relevant to graphic design projects.

  • Explore the relationship between form and function in visual communication, considering audience, purpose, and context.
