History of Art & Graphic Design

This is a lecture and presentation-based class, using “A History of Graphic Design” by Philip B. Meggs as our guide. We will start with the invention of Printing and follow the development of Art & Design to the 20th-century Modern Style. Students will be asked to create presentations and artwork based on historical art movements and share them through presentations with the group.

Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Understand the technology and design considerations throughout history.

  • Integrate the use of these traditional design styles into their own work.

  • Realize how rich art history is as a source for wonderful ideas and techniques.

  • Understand the development of graphic design from early human history until the beginning of the 20th century.

This course follows the full-time program schedule, which begins on September 29. This term, two statutory holidays fall on Tuesdays. To ensure students receive the full 48 hours of class time, the missed hours will be evenly redistributed throughout the term.

For courses scheduled in 2-hour sessions, each class will be extended by 25 minutes.

Santiago Cardoso

INSTRUCTOR – Graphic Media Design

Santiago Cardoso is a multidisciplinary graphic designer with over 15 years of experience in branding, editorial, web design, and social media strategy. Originally from Mexico City, he has collaborated with agencies and brands such as Tyson Foods, Pfizer, and Phillips Brewing, as well as with cultural institutions and startups in both Mexico and Canada. Santiago is passionate about visual storytelling and mentoring emerging creatives. He currently lives in Victoria, B.C., where he teaches and continues exploring new creative outlets.
