For the digital dabbler to the solopreneur and beyond. From a simple idea or existing design, refine or develop your concept and brand voice into a solidly designed and hardworking logotype and brand identity.
If creating or empowering your personal or small business brand, this class is for you. This course provides an overview of what a well-crafted business or personal brand is, and how best to use it.
Create a new logo or refine your existing one and integrate this into your business digital brand asset library. We cover the creative process from initial idea, software creation, through to assembling your brand book for presentation. This class is structured to be practical and hands-on, with a combination of lecture, software tutorials, demonstrations, studio exercises, group discussions, and analysis of successful branding case studies.

Course Length: 6 weeks: 36 hours
Materials Needed: A USB flash drive to store and transport saved files. A sketchbook, drawing materials and a notebook.

This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training. As such, PTIB did not review this program.
Each week, a design class is followed by a software techniques session to bring your brand vision to life. With Adobe Creative Cloud’s Photoshop and Illustrator as a flexible and powerful cross-disciplinary foundation, students will be guided to a greater design comfort level with an expanded skill set in vector and pixel-based static and animated image creation.
Week 1:
Creating a strong, emotive, and enduring logo and brand identity. Outline of the components of a brand, starting with ‘who we are’ (brand story). Creative exploration and visualization of conceptual ideas for a logo to express the essence of a business by minimal means.

Week 1 Class 2: Exploring concepts and visual communication, capturing the essence.
Week 2:
From pencil thumbnail and/or student reference, we will introduce the powerful pen tool and exacting bezier curves. We will explore auto trace and simplify from a scanned or downloaded reference.
We will begin to consider gathering, drawing, photographing still and motion-based image brand assets, and discuss royalty-free image collections. Through analysis of case studies we will look at what constitutes a strong brand identity.
Week 2 Class 1: An Introduction to Adobe Illustrator. An initial tour of the available toolset. We will introduce you to powerful drawing tools
Week 2 Class 2: Case studies of successful logos and brands.
Week 3:
We will look at shapes primitives and pathfinder options. Say hello to the world of colour – colour palettes, colour spaces, and colour panels will be presented. The power of transparency and blending modes will be demonstrated. We will discuss the elements and principles of design, the design process, and the emotive qualities of colour.

Week 4:
Stand out from the crowd. How to typeset a good headline and create a readable block of text. Let’s look at customizing vector type shapes and experiment with non-destructive styles. We will look at the visual hierarchy and ways of integrating of type and image.
Week 4 Class 1: Typography, setting headlines and body text in Illustrator.
Week 4 Class 2: Look and feel of a brand, the voice or tone of a brand (what we say and how we say it) in the creation of a consistent brand identity.
Week 5:
Introduction to layers for Illustrator and Photoshop – transparency settings and blending modes.
How to place images in Illustrator with dynamic editable Photoshop links. We will consider how the look and feel of a brand (what we look like), and the voice or tone of a brand (what we say and how we say it) in the creation of a consistent brand identity.
Visual hierarchy and the integration of type and image.
Week 6:
In-class project troubleshooting and Q&A. We will address tech issues and design challenges in assembling your brand presentation. Putting it all together in Illustrator /Photoshop/ Adobe Express.
