Professional Photography & Imaging at Pacific Design Academy


Wedding Photography

The 2-year (6 semester) Digital Photography and Imaging program provides students with both the technical and visual communication skills required for a variety of careers related to photography and imaging. Components of the program focus on digital capture, imaging technologies, photographic art history, entrepreneurial skills, basic graphic design, basic video foundations and portfolio development. Students use industry standard hardware and software to capture and manipulate images to demonstrate skill and creativity. Students gain the chance to be unique and individual all while showcasing industry expected skills that meet the needs of future clients. Students will develop business and career assets that are relevant to the digital photography and imaging industry.

Graduates will be employable as assistants, photographers or digital retouchers in small studios, newspapers, web development companies, service bureaus, digital processing labs or self-owned businesses. Graduates will have both technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to run a successful business offering a variety of services such as but not limited to:photojournalism, weddings, portraits, public relations, commercial, industrial, retouching/manipulation, advertising, publication, tourism, graphic design and fine art.

Photographic Techniques

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the technical components of digital photography and studio lighting.

Digital Processing

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the technical and professional components of Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop pertaining to metadata, archiving, professional retouching and restoration.

Design & Presentation

Although art by its nature is an intuitive process, there are many techniques that are very useful to help you create and analyze your work and its individual merit. This course is designed to provide insights into Colour and the 'Elements of Design'.With an understanding of these basic elements, students will be able to create an articulate analysis of theirs and other designers work—why do some things work and others do not!

Photographic Surroundings

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of how everyday surroundings impact an image in regards to light, texture, material and composition.

Technology of Imaging

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of how imaging equipment functions and will learn the biology behind the technology. Students will dissect imaging equipment for a greater knowledge of why imaging equipment works the way it does.

Issues & Trends

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of current and past conflicts within the arts industry and how to overcome them Students will grasp the concept of why certain trends are used in the industry and what effect they display.

Visual Communications

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of composition, perspective, line, colour, texture and light and how they can be used to create various emotions.

Aesthetics & Criticism

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding photographs and art is critiqued in a variety of different mediums

Photographic Art History

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the history behind photographic art. The course provides students with an opportunity to create their own art with a digital camera and understand why it is considered art.

Video Foundations

This class will cover video technologies and audio design as they apply to the worldwide web and interactive technologies. Subjects include video editing, audio design, motion graphics, video compression, web embedding, and optimization. For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the video setting on DSLR cameras while utilizing past knowledge obtained in Visual Communications and Photographic Techniques courses.

Graphic Design

Develop an ability to analyze type, to discuss it using specialized vocabulary, to choose appropriate type treatments for design, and to acquire a sensitivity to the impact of effective type choices. Additionally this class will introduce Adobe Illustrator as a Type and Drawing tool. There is a strong technical start in Postscript Graphics using Adobe Illustrator. Students will gain a basic understanding of the structure and use of Adobe InDesign and its use as a publicatioin tool. Students should be able to build, edit, and save documents that would successfully print commercially. We will also look at online publishing services.

Experimental Photoraphy

To open the students to the concept of what is New. To get the students to expand their conceptual and technical skills into areas that are unfamiliar to them.

Business Principles

For students to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to run a fully successful photography business post graduation.
