Each day of our lives, much of what we do and feel is directly related to our interior environment. It influences the way we live, work and interact with others. If you enjoy creating functionally beautiful spaces and using a variety of unique materials then this course is for you.
Located in historical old town, our two year interior design program is taught in a creative environment where technical knowledge blends with artistic inspiration. Our bright design studios boast high ceilings and large windows, perfect for studying spacial design concepts. Our extensive product library enables our students to access a variety of materials making it easy for them to complete their projects. Our computer labs are equipped with the latest software ensuring our students graduate with the computer skills needed to create detailed plans and three dimensional modeling for the design industry.
Our integrated curriculum combines practical skills of drafting (hand and computer), space planning, and construction theory with colour, styles and materials use. The techniques of modern construction learned throughout the course are implemented into drawings and are enforced by the use of accurate computer simulations. Studies in perspective and architectural rendering help students to present their work in a professional manner.
The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recognizes the 'Interior Architectural Design' program at the Pacific Design Academy as a NKBA Supported Program.
Students will learn about colour systems, value relationships, colour psychology and the use of colour in interiors. They will understand the principles and elements of design and how they relate to interior spaces. They will learn how to assemble colour and material boards for client review and presentations.History of Interior Design, Architecture & Furnishings
Students will review architectural styles from ancient to modern and understand the way history affects today's buildings. Historic room settings, furniture design cabinetry and window coverings will be studied. Romantic revivals, Bauhaus, French and English country styles and the work of modern designers will be reviewed.Space Planning & Design Projects
Projects contained in this course are designed to stretch the student's skill level and imagination and foster conceptual integration of varied skills. Projects will be residential in the 1st year and commercial in the 2nd year.Construction Theory
Students are introduced to the principles of building construction, wood frame systems, products and terminology. They will learn about structural forces, building loads, skeletal systems, foundations and the building envelope. Differences between residential and commercial construction systems will be examined and building codes will be addressed. Building codes set standards within a given jurisdiction for all building designs to adhere to. Students learn to understand and apply code requirements and familiarize themselves with accessibility, fire protection and occupant safety in housing and small buildings.Product Knowledge
This survey course gives the student an understanding of the materials used in interior design. Textile knowledge, wall coverings, carpeting, tile, natural stone, laminate, and flooring are essential when selecting proper finishes for residential and commercial interiors.Drafting
The techniques of drafting and graphic representation are the established language of architecture. Students learn to use hand-drafting tools, and develop skills with line weight and lettering. They will understand architectural cross-referencing. Students will further develop their drafting skills preparing site plans, floor plans, elevations, and sections.Kitchen and Bath Design
The kitchen & bath industry is growing and becoming more complex with the use of new materials and products. We seek to address this growing emphasis on the kitchen & bath industry in the current residential market place with the use of the N.K.B.A. (National Kitchen & Bath Association) model of standards. Students will understand the use of standardized measurements, ducting, plumbing & electrical.
All CAD work is done using the industry standard cross platform drafting program VectorWorks. Students will learn to use the Vectorworks design software. They will complete a number of projects learning how to generate floor plans and elevations using industry standard guidelines. Students develop 3D models while learning the basics of object creation, lighting, textures and rendering modes. These techniques are incorporated into presentation renderings of residential homes and commercial projects. Additional areas of study include development of construction documents, incorporating construction details, building sections, and schedules and legends for residential and commercial buildings.3D CAD Modeling
Students develop 3D models while learning the basics of object creation, lighting, textures and rendering modes. These techniques are incorporated into presentation renderings of residential homes and commercial projects. All CAD work is done using the cross platform drafting program Vectorworks.Project Management
Students will examine their ability to plan, monitor and control all aspects of a project to achieve objectives on time and to the specified budget, quality and performance.Professional Practice
Students will learn abut the business procedures of interior design, including protocols that any business must apply in order to be successful.Lighting
Students will be introduced to the many facets of lighting design by learning about natural and artificial light sources, the principles of light and color, layering and energy use as well as lighting systems and their various controls. Students will learn how to utilize this information to design quality residential and commercial lighting installations.Portfolio Preparation
The ability to successfully market yourself will greatly enhance your job prospects. A good portfolio is an essential tool in today's marketplace. Using 11" x 17" format, students will organize and re-touch their work for inclusion in their portfolio. Resume writing will also be covered.Rendering & Presentation Techniques
The ability to present ideas clearly to a client is extremely important. Students are introduced to the methods and techniques of composing presentation drawings for interior and exterior spaces. Using one and two point perspective, drawings will be rendered using colour, highlight and shadow techniques and then animated by the addition of people and foliage.
