Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the program?
The programs vary in length. Each program is typically 38.7 weeks long consisting of at least 720 hours per year of instruction time.

When do the programs start?
Full time programs start in the Fall (September), and again in Winter (January).

What is the difference between the Fall and Winter programs?
The Fall session is 10 months, with 20 hours per week of instruction with a summer break. The Winter session is 9 months, with 20 hours per week of instruction and no summer break; this allows students to graduate from the full two year program in just 18 months.

How many students are in each class?
Each class has no more than 18 students, this provides for plenty of individual attention.

What are the admission requirements?
The minimum requirement for acceptance is Grade 12, or mature student status (age 19 at the start of the program). Basic computer literacy is a definite asset, but not mandatory for any program.

How do I apply?
All applicants are required to fill out a registration form (this can be found on the website or at the school). Each registration form must be accompanied by a letter of intent along with proof of education or a copy of your Birth Certificate or Drivers License and a $200.00 ($300 for international students) non-refundable registration fee.

What is a Letter of Intent?
This is a letter in which you are to clarify your future goals to ensure the program meets your needs.

How do I know if I've been accepted?
All successful applicants will be notified by mail or email shortly after admission has been approved.

Is financial assistance available?
Students enrolled in diploma programs at the academy may be eligible for financial assistance from a number of sources. The Canada Student Loan plan offers assistance for eligible students, and WorkSafe BC (formerly W.C.B.), Social Services and Human Resources Canada offer some sponsorship programs. Contact the school or the agency involved for further information. The Academy offers several tuition payment options to students paying their own tuition fees.

As a student at the Pacific Design Academy, am I eligible for student loans?
Yes, The Pacific Design Academy is both registered and accredited with the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA), a Crown Corporation under the Ministry of Advanced Education of BC. http://www.pctia.bc.ca/

This allows our students to access any funding options available to them.

Do you offer job placement?
The school itself does not offer job placement. However, we are often contacted by employers seeking entry-level employees. As such, we ask all students to leave us with a contact e-mail so that we can pass these postings along. We also have an in-house Postings Board.

Do I need to have taken drama in high school?
Acting for Screen students do not need to have high school Drama credits. If you have taken some drama classes, acted in a few plays, or made your own comedy videos – that is great. But we are not looking for previous experience, we are looking for potential: passion and enthusiasm, and the willingness to learn.

How do I know if I have talent?
Nobody can answer this question for you. If you have the burning desire to become an actor or creative artist, and you can’t imagine doing anything else, then you owe it to yourself to learn as much technique as you can, to practise your craft, and to gain experience. Every successful actor is willing to learn and grow through-out his or her career.

Do you offer housing?
We offer homestay options through Canada Homestay Network. CHN arranges a personalized and objective match between the student and their Canadian host based on their mutual backgrounds, interests, lifestyles, and educational goals. Once a student is happily placed, they monitor their progress in their program so they can fix problems when they arise, promptly and efficiently. They will meet with students on their first day at school and are available in person every week thereafter; They invite each student to evaluate their homestay experience in writing, early enough so that they can review it and make any changes necessary before their departure. http://canadahomestaynetwork.ca
